It is reported that in May last year, the DPRK announced 2016-2020 years' "five year planning strategy for national economic development". One of the goals is to provide conditions and environment for the people to enjoy the rich and civilized life. This is the first five year plan of the DPRK since 1980s.

consumer market

Significant changes have taken place.

North Korean businesses began to focus on brands. Manufacturers put the task of producing more daily necessities in the first place, increasing product selectivity and paying more attention to commodity packaging.

In terms of means of payment and ways of promotion, they are becoming more and more diversified.

Recently, the reporter shot the Korean state department store Potonggang on the spot.

Since Kim Jeong-eun announced the five year economic plan in May last year, North Korean manufacturers have put the task of producing more daily necessities in the first place and pay more attention to commodity packaging.

In stores like Potonggang, customers choose to pay in cash or by credit card.

Products manufactured in Pyongyang are increasingly appearing in rural areas, and vice versa.

Although the US dollar and the renminbi are still widely used, more and more consumers use prepaid cards or local bills to pay. This reflects stronger purchasing power and confidence in the stability of their currencies.

In terms of product selectivity, for example, the ice cream brand May Day Stadium has 120 ice cream varieties.

Taedonggang, a brewery in Pyongyang, has recently added eighth kinds of beer to its product line, including black beer, light beer and chocolate beer.

There are dozens of domestic cigarettes, soft drinks containing sugar and fresh French fries and canned soup on the shelves.

In the exclusive store, the latest "Pyongyang" smart phone sells for $200.

The mobile phone may be made in China but is labelled locally.

Despite sanctions imposed by the United Nations, North Korea still sells imported products from all over the world.

It's not hard to buy a can of coffee drink from Japan, and the price is about 80 cents.

Potonggang store manager Song Un Pyol, referring to business hours, said: "in 2015, our respected leader Kim Jeong-eun asked the shop to open from 10 a.m. to 8 at night, because many laboring people usually go to work after work in the evening.
