India textile national minister Panabaaka Lakshmi said that in January to May this year, India's textile and apparel exports to the US and EU countries increased by 1.61% and 11.66% respectively over the same period last year.

In a written report, she added that the government has taken action to expand the market share of India in Japan, West Asia, Africa and Australia in cooperation with the textile export promotion agency.

These initiatives will include the India textile brand holding large-scale exhibitions in these countries, the buyer and the seller meeting to attend the high-profile textile fairs and exhibitions.

In 2009-10, clothing exports in India dropped by 2.64% to $10 billion 640 million, compared to $10 billion 930 million in 2008-09.

The main reason for the decline in exports is the decline in exports to the European market, no increase in exports to the US market, and price competition from other countries, such as Bangladesh and Vietnam.

According to the data of India garment export promotion association, India garment exports to the European Union 5 billion 680 million US dollars, accounting for 55% of the total clothing exports of India in 2009 over the years.

The United States is another major market for textiles in India. Exports to the United States account for 30% of India's overall clothing exports.
